Community Networks & Natural Disaster Management
Session name
Community Networks & Natural Disaster Management
Date and Time
Wednesday October 3, 1:00-5:30PM
Summary
Globally, significant progress has been made in recent years with respect to Internet access, however, still much more need to be done. Presently, fifty four percent of the global community is not connected to the internet. In the Caribbean region, big disparities can be noted. As measured by internet penetration rates, while countries such as Barbados (80 %), Trinidad & Tobago (70 %) are well connected, this is not the case in others such as Haiti (12 %) and Guyana (40 %).
The challenge in less connected countries is mainly in their large rural communities. This session focuses on how all stakeholders can work together to promote connectivity through Community Networks in these areas.
While we are promoting connectivity, natural disasters have a long-lasting impact on the economies of all affected countries. Therefore, disaster mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery should be a joint effort involving many stakeholders. The session will also examine the role of actors such as, Governments, Telecommunications’ operators and Internet Service Providers, NGOs and international and regional organizations. To work efficiently and effectively, all these stakeholders should coordinate at the local level.
The strategies and measures highlighted in the session are applicable primarily to the island states of the Caribbean. However, given that natural disasters do not discriminate, these measures and recommendations, could be considered by other regions, or globally as well.
Audience and prerequisites
The session is geared towards professionals who design, build, maintain and secure the computer networks, advanced Internet end users, ICT policy makers, telecommunications regulators, university students, and network administrators from public and private sectors.
